A conference at the United Nations in March 2023 provided an opportunity to explore the Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, and their close relationship with human rights.
Adopted by UN Member States in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda, the 17 SDGs provide a global framework for reducing poverty and inequality, improving education and health, expanding access to clean water and energy, protecting the planet and promoting peaceful and inclusive societies.
Development and human rights
The SDGs and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights approach many of the same challenges from complementary directions. Access to education, health, decent work and an adequate standard of living are development priorities, but they are also connected to internationally recognised human rights.
Progress towards the 2030 Agenda therefore depends not only on economic indicators. It also requires attention to equality, dignity, participation and the protection of people who may otherwise be left behind.
